Abbreviations are normally used to specify a degree, rather than spelling out the name in full. Many degrees have more than one abbreviation.
Bachelor's degree

Usually an undergraduate academic degree awarded for a course or major that generally lasts three or four years.

Most common undergraduate degrees: Bachelor of Arts (B.A. or A.B.), for soft subjects and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. or B.S.) for hard and more technical subjects.

Master's degree

Academic degree usually awarded for completion of a postgraduate course of one to three years in duration.

Doctorate

Academic degree of the highest level.

Most common doctor's degree is PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), which normally requires a period of study and research of three to five years.

Upon completion of the first year of a PhD program, the student may be awarded an MPhil degree (Master in Philosophy), should he/ she not continue with the program.
